Locktober Day 18: Write Down Why You Want to Quit
Share
Day eighteen of my 31-day series for men locking up alone. If there is one day in Locktober when most men want to stop, it is somewhere around today. So today we meet that feeling head on.
Your task today
Take out your log and write down, honestly and in full, the reason you want to quit right now. Even if the feeling is small today. Even if it is enormous. Get it all on paper.
Then look at what you wrote and decide which kind of reason it is.
-A physical reason: Pain, a sore that will not settle, numbness, a device that pinches no matter what you adjust. These reasons are real and they come first. Open your key, take the device off, and look after your body. Resting until your skin heals is part of doing Locktober properly, and you can lock back up once you are ready.
-A mental reason: Boredom, frustration, restlessness, a craving that feels impossible to sit with, the sense that there is no point anymore. These reasons are real too, and they are exactly what the next twenty-four hours are for.
If your reason is mental: the 24 hour rule
Make yourself a promise that you will take no action on this decision until the same time tomorrow. Then fill the next twenty-four hours with support:
-
Open the letter from day fourteen. You wrote it for exactly this moment. Read it slowly.
-
Reread your day one sentence, and the reason you added on day fifteen if it changed.
-
Look at your finishing reward. Remind yourself what is waiting at the end.
-
Post in your community. Tell them it is day eighteen and you are struggling. You will find dozens of men in exactly the same place.
-
Move. A long walk does more for a heavy head than almost anything else.
Tomorrow, read what you wrote today and decide again with a clearer mind.
Why this matters
Days fifteen to twenty-two are the psychological wall of Locktober. The excitement has faded, the finish line is out of sight, and continuing becomes purely a matter of will. Almost every man who has done this has stood exactly where you are today.
Urges and moods rise, peak, and pass, often faster than they feel like they will. Writing the reason down pulls it out of your head and onto paper, where it usually looks smaller. Waiting a day gives the feeling time to pass on its own. Most men who follow this rule wake up the next morning glad they waited.
This is also the moment a keyholder earns her place. She would sit with you, remind you why you started, and hold you to your promise. Today your letter, your sentence, and your community do that job together.
And if you still want to stop tomorrow
Then stop, and be proud of eighteen days. Ending by choice after careful thought is a completely different thing from giving up in a bad moment. Write down what happened and what you learned, and use it for next year.
Tomorrow: talking to someone who is locked too. In the meantime, visit my instagram for more locktober content, send me your story, questions, and read about other people's experience.
