Locktober: How a Kink Community Inside Joke Took Over the Internet

Every year around the end of September, something happens. The forums get busier, people start posting their device photos and their goals for the month, keyholders start planning. And somewhere out there, a man is quietly panicking about whether he can actually make it thirty-one days.
Welcome to Locktober y'all!
What it actually is
The concept could not be simpler; You lock up on October 1st, you stay locked until October 31st. Your keyholder holds the key and decides everything in between. That is the whole thing.
The rules are made by the two (or 3-4 of you) but the basics are pretty much no ejaculations until the end of the month.. Are you scared yet? Don't worry too much, Locktober spread because people liked it and kept doing it, which is how the best community traditions tend to work.
It started as the chastity community's answer to No Nut November
Locktober came out of kink message boards in the mid-2010s, and the earliest traces point back to around 2015 on an orgasm denial forum that no longer exists ( Let me know please if you remember the name, just to make a memento for them here). It grew through Tumblr and FetLife, mostly in orgasm denial and femdom circles, before anyone outside those spaces had heard of it.
The name is exactly what it looks like, lock + October, and the timing is not a coincidence either. No Nut November was already becoming a thing, and Locktober is essentially the chastity community saying yes, but with hardware.
Then it got big
Search interest for Locktober has spiked every single October since 2016, and by 2024 it had nearly doubled any previous year. The dedicated Locktober subreddit, started in 2019, passed 23,000 members. The broader chastity community on Reddit is well over 300,000 people by the time I’m writing this post.
So can we even use the word “niche” anymore? Because this looks like a genuine annual event with a real community behind it to me, who are not going anywhere.
And then TikTok got hold of it
Ok this is my favourite part.
In late 2024, straight men on TikTok started using Locktober to mean something like "locking in." , focus up, hit the gym, eat clean, sort your life out before the year ends. Pure self improvement content, posted with the Locktober tag.
They had no idea, one video racked up nearly a million views telling people to lock in for October, while the actual Locktober crowd watched from the sidelines enjoying themselves. (Well, as much as you can enjoy yourself locked up of course)
But what makes this interesting is that both versions are about discipline, restraint, and committing to something uncomfortable for a month. They arrived at the same word from completely opposite directions and neither group was wrong about what it meant to them.
Why it works so well as an entry point
A defined challenge with a start date and an end date is so much easier psychologically than open ended chastity. You are doing a thing for thirty-one days, the same way people do a dry January or a month of no sugar. There is an off ramp built in, and knowing it exists makes the whole thing less frightening.
You also are not doing it alone. Thousands of other people are locked up at the same time, posting about their day fourteen struggles, comparing notes, complaining, encouraging and inspiring each other. That community aspect carries people through weeks that would be much harder in isolation.
And for couples, it gives you a reason to start. Bringing chastity up in late September under the Locktober, when there is a whole event to point at it, is considerably easier.
If you want to do it
Start getting your device sorted now rather than on September 30th, because a cage that does not fit properly will end your Locktober in the first week. Read my sizing guide, measure properly, and give yourself time to try it and adjust before the month starts.
Agree your terms with your keyholder in advance. How strict is this going to be, what happens if something goes wrong, what counts as breaking it, and what happens after October 31st. My post on the conversation before the cage goes on covers all of this.
And set the rule about the safe word before you begin, because a challenge is still a challenge and your body still gets the final say. There is no prize for pushing through numbness or pain, or leaderboard to climb, only one who you can win against is your own mind.
Locktober is meant to be fun. Thirty-one days, one key and a bunch of disciplined men who are capable to overcome their desire for cheap dopamine.That is all it ever was, but in my opinion, that's a fucking brilliant idea.
