Locktober Day 25: A Letter Back to Day One
Share
Day twenty-five of my 31-day series for men locking up alone. Welcome to the final phase. The finish is in sight, and for most men this is when the energy starts to come back. Today you mark the start of the last week by looking at how much you have changed.
Your task today
On day fourteen you wrote a letter forward, to the future version of you who would want to quit. Today you write one in the other direction, back to the man who locked up on October 1st.
He was nervous, a little excited, and about to find out what the month would ask of him. Tell him what you know now. Use these prompts to get started, and then let it run wherever it needs to go:
-
How the urges feel now, compared to the first week.
-
How you relate to your phone and the quick escapes you counted on day five.
-
How you sleep, how you focus, how your body feels.
-
What you understand about your own desire that he had yet to put into words.
-
The hardest day, and how you got through it.
-
What you are proud of.
-
The one piece of advice you wish someone had given him on day one.
Write it by hand if you can, and take your time. A page or more is ideal.
When you finish, read your day one sentence one more time, then read the letter you just wrote. Put them side by side in your log.
Why this matters
Change during a month like this happens slowly, a little each day, which makes it almost invisible from the inside. You wake up on day twenty-five feeling roughly like yourself and assume very little has moved. Then you sit down and describe the man from day one, and you realise how far away he already feels.
Seeing that distance clearly does two things. It gives you real proof that the month has been worth it. And it gives you something to carry forward after October ends, because the changes you name today are the ones you get to decide whether to keep.
Keep both letters together
Store today's letter with the one from day fourteen. Together they tell the whole story of your month: the man who was steady enough to write to his struggling future self, and the man who came out the other side to write back. Next October, whether you do Locktober again or not, you will want to read them.
Six days left
Enjoy this phase. The hard part is behind you, and the days ahead are the ones you earned.
Tomorrow: deciding how your finish will go. In the meantime, visit my instagram for more locktober content, send me your story, questions, and read about other people's experience.
