Locktober Day 5: The Dopamine Audit
Share
Day five of my 31-day series for men locking up alone. Your most reliable outlet has been locked away for four days now. Today let’s look at where all that energy has been going instead.
Your task today
For one full day, keep a tally of every time you reach for a quick hit of relief. Every.Single.One. Carry a small notebook or use a note on your phone, and make a mark each time you:
-
Unlock your phone without a real reason
-
Open social media or start doomscrolling
-
Feel the pull toward porn or an explicit image
-
Try to touch yourself through your cage
-
Grab a snack out of habit
-
Reach for anything else that gives you an instant little reward
Next to each mark, write two or three words about what was happening right before. Bored at my desk. Stressed after a call. Lying in bed. These informations are extremely valuable and now you are at a state when you're understimulated enough so you can register every little things more mindfully.
At the end of the day, count them up and add the total to your log.
Why this matters
I wrote a whole post about chastity being a dopamine detox, and this is where you start to feel it. Orgasm is one of the fastest, most reliable rewards your body has. When it is always available, it quietly becomes the answer to everything: stress, boredom, loneliness, restlessness. Lock it away and those feelings are still there, looking for a new place to go. Most men discover they have simply moved the habit over to their phone.
I know this pattern well from my own silent retreats. My mouth is my main outlet, aka I talk a lot. When I close it for a week, I can suddenly see every other little escape I reach for, because the big one is gone.
That is what today is for. Seeing it clearly. You are only noticing today, so go easy on yourself about the number. A high count simply tells you where the work is.
What to look for
Once you have your notes of the day(s), read your notes and look for the pattern. Most men find their reaching clusters around a few moments: a certain time of day, a certain feeling, a certain place. Compare it with the urges you have been recording in your log since day three. You will usually see the same moments showing up in both.
Those moments are your weak points for the rest of the month. Knowing them now means you can plan for them, so day eighteen holds far fewer surprises.
Keep your tally
Hold on to today's notes. Tomorrow you are going to use them.
Tomorrow: clearing the shortcuts. In the meantime, visit my instagram for more locktober content, send me your story, questions, and read about other people's experience.
