Locktober Day 6: Clear the Shortcuts
Share
Day six of my 31-day series for men locking up alone. Yesterday you counted every reach for quick relief. Today you make those reaches harder.
Your task today
Take yesterday's tally and find your top three weak points. The three moments or habits that showed up most. Then put a little distance between you and each one.
Here are the changes that work best:
-
Clear the bookmarks and saved content. Anything explicit you have saved, followed, or bookmarked goes today. Log out of accounts that pull you in.
-
Move the worst apps off your home screen. Put them in a folder on the last page, or delete them for the month. Every extra swipe gives you a moment to choose.
-
Set screen time limits. Both iPhone and Android let you cap time on specific apps. Set the limit, and ideally have the passcode set by someone else, or write it down and seal it with your key.
-
Turn on grayscale. A black and white screen is dramatically less appealing to scroll. It sounds too simple to work, and it works remarkably well.
-
Charge your phone outside the bedroom. Late night is where most men's urges cluster, and the phone in bed is usually the reason.
Pick the ones that match the weak points in your own story.
Why this matters
Willpower runs out. It is strongest in the morning and weakest at eleven at night after a long day, which is exactly when most men slip. Relying on willpower alone for thirty-one days is a losing strategy.
Friction works far better. When the thing you reach for takes three extra steps instead of one, those few seconds are often enough for the impulse to pass. You are building a small version of what the cage already does for your body: a physical barrier that takes the decision out of the moment.
This is also exactly what a good keyholder would do for you. She would notice where you struggle and quietly take those temptations out of reach. Alone, you are doing that for yourself today. With my help of course. I’m here for you :)
What to do with the space
When you remove a habit, it leaves a gap, and the gap wants filling. Have something ready. A book next to the bed, a walk after a stressful call, a podcast for the commute. Later this month there are whole days built around putting that energy somewhere better, so for now, simply pick one small replacement for your biggest weak point.
Keep going
Write the changes you made into your log. At the end of the month you will decide which ones to keep, and plenty of men keep the new settings long after October.
Tomorrow: your week one review. In the meantime, visit my instagram for more locktober content, send me your story, questions, and read about other people's experience.
